In 2001, the realisation that community radio is an important tool for change in new and young democracies led to the pilot of the radio programme. The year 2002 saw the launch of the programme which was branded ‘Turning up the volume on gender equity'. Through the radio programme Agenda hopes to reinforce the idea that women need to be a part of the change and their views are vital in establishing and changing society. The Radio Project is used to promote and distribute gender content, where poor and marginalised people, mostly women, interact and participate actively in the creation and dissemination of their own information.

Weekly 15-minute pre-production news programmes on gender are distributed to the community radio stations that form part of the gender programme.  These news items are translated from English into Zulu, Sotho and Xhosa as repackaged from the journal and sourced from various resources. The project's core objectives are to strengthen and develop the capacity of community radio to broadcast issues of interest to women in their constituencies; to provide a conduit for information to be channelled through this project from other agencies informing women of their constitutional rights and develop their capacity to advance gender equality.

Through its endeavours to increase capacity and provide skill to the community radio sector, the radio project conducts workshops to strengthen and develop the capacity of Community radio to integrate and mainstream gender in all radio programmes and all levels of their structures. Participants are also given tools to develop gender and radio public awareness.
