Agenda Academic Writing Skills Development Workshop : Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights: 29-31 May 2007

Diverse, thought provoking academic research and publishing on sexual health and reproductive rights is the corner stone of a strong, democratic country. It guides policy and infrastructure decisions, and determines the course of the laws and social norms citizens live by. We recognise the need for extensive discussion on this issue and at the same time we are also aware of the exclusion of many voices from this arena of thought.

Rights relating to sexual health and reproductive rights have a substantial impact on; people’s lives, their physical security, strength, health, employment and personally economy, education, mobility, and the overall development of their citizen participation in democratic development. In recognizing the importance of understanding and improving sexual health and reproductive rights, Agenda is holding a workshop to help increase the knowledge and research in this area, especially as it relates to women’s access to resources and decision making.

Agenda is offering emerging women academics the opportunity to strengthen their writing and publishing skills in the field of sexual health and reproductive rights. This will be done through a writing skills development workshop designed especially to meet the needs and challenges faced by women academics seeking to publish.

The primary course objectives of the Agenda Academic Writing Skills Development Workshop are to:

• promote and enhance the field of women’s academic writing on sexual health and reproductive rights in South Africa
• encourage a discussion of women’s issues, from women’s perspectives
• increase gender awareness and capacity of women to express themselves within academia and through academic publications
• create a network of emerging women writers so that they can support and help develop each other’s skills, and to
• prioritise the development of research into gender issues with a focus on solution based academic writing.

Course Outline:
Introduction
The course will take place over a three day period and will provide discussions on the need for thought provoking academic work in the field of sexual health and reproductive rights, while also providing the participants with vital training to enable them to strengthen their own work.

Agenda will also provide all resource material, including a 2007 journal subscription and access to our online archive of journals. It is highly participatory and participants are encouraged to bring their own current work to the meeting to share and develop with the group.

Participants will also receive a full list of accredited journals specialising in gender, sexuality, reproduction, development and human rights.
