VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: JOURNAL EDITOR PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Agenda Feminist Media is an established not for profit organisation that uses print, broadcast and new media technologies to strengthen the capacity of women and men to challenge gender discrimination and inequality. Agenda Feminist Media seeks a full-time Journal Editor, to become an integral member of its team, which is dedicated to empowering women and discussing gender issues in Africa.

Competencies and Experience:

  • Min three years experience in print journalism and two years editorial experience, publishing under regular deadlines and the demonstrated ability to thoroughly research stories and topics while handling multiple tasks in an organised manner. 
  • Knowledge of feminist theory and the gender debates in South Africa. 
  • An appropriate tertiary qualification. 
  • Driver’s licence. 
  • Supervise, coordinate and participate in all the phases of the editorial and production activities of the Agenda journal, within the journal guidelines. 
  • Establish and implement editorial procedures to ensure publications are completed in a timely manner. 
  • The ability to brainstorm effectively with strong-willed editorial collaborators (in the Editorial Advisory Board). 
  • Self-directed, highly motivated, and reliable. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, Photoshop or other design software would be an advantage.

Reports to:

Executive Director
Works closely with the Editorial Advisory Board

Key performance areas:

  1. Editorial planning. 
  2. Commissioning articles. 
  3. Editing. 
  4. Production. 
  5. Developing impact indicators and market research. 
  6. Mentoring and supervision of journalist intern. 
  7. Increasing circulation and growth through ensuring a quality product which meets the market needs of Agenda Feminist Media. 
  8. Ensuring journal expenditure is within the approved budget. 
  9. Maintaining accreditation of the journal through the International Bibliography of Social Sciences (IBSS). 
  10. Collaborate and work in a team with other departments, as required, in order to meet the key performance areas and fulfill the job description.

  • Agenda Feminist Media will offer a market related salary commensurate with experience, plus benefits (RA/ pension, medical aid and parking). 
  • The position will be based in Agenda’s Durban Office.
