René A. Smith (Chairperson) 

René A. Smith is an Independent Consultant & Media Researcher. She has lectured at various institutions across South Africa and has published on media policy and representation. She is a member of the Review Board of the Film & Publication Board (FPB), where she has served as Acting Chair. She is a member of the advisory board of Global Knowledge and the governing board of ABC Ulwazi, and has served on ICASA's Broadcasting Monitoring and Complaints Committee (BMCC) and the Federation of African Media Women of Southern Africa (FAMW-SA). Her educational qualifications are in (amongst others) Broadcasting & Media and Cultural Studies from institutions in SA and the UK.

Janine Hicks

Janine Hicks is the Director of the Centre for Public Participation based in Durban. She has a Masters degree in Participation, Development and Social Change from the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex University and her main areas of interest are in public participation in policy-making; social justice advocacy; gender equality and women's participation in governance.

Sharita Samuel

Sharita Samuel is an attorney at the Durban branch of the Legal Resources Centre and holds a BA.LLB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is the founder and National Coordinator of the Women's Rights Project. She is engaged in a partnership with the Southern African Legal Assistance Network (SALAN) countries on customary law.

Sheila Tyeku

Sheila Tyeku's most recent position was as director of Quality Promotion and Development for the Council on Higher Education. She holds a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Bristol and was a founding member of Speak Magazine and the Durban Women's Group. 

Leah Madalane

Leah Madalane currently works for Government Communications (GCIS). She has been with the organization for 11 years, responsible for the training and development of staff. She is a philosopher and a non-practicing researcher by profession. She did her post graduate studies in social sciences qualifying in 1990. Her postgraduate thesis was on women in politics hence the passion for women and gender issues, especially the political side of it. Whenever time and funds allow, she participates in workshops, seminars and conferences that discuss issues related to women and gender equality.  

Libby Lloyd

Libby is currently self-employed as a consultant focusing on media and development, strategic planning, and policy development (with a focus on gender and communications). She has a wide range of experience and has worked in number of fields, including as a grant-maker, regulator, researcher, journalist, trainer, writer and editor.  Prior to working for herself, Libby was CEO of the Media Development and Diversity Agency and assisted in setting up the statutory body. She has also worked as a Councillor on the regulator (Independent Communications Authority of South Africa). She started her career as a journalist, working in radio and for a range of publications including SPEAK Media Project.
