Our deepest condolences on the loss of Anne Marrian who passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014 at Toronto Western Hospital in Canada at the age of 60.
Anne was the Director of Agenda Feminist Media from 1997 to 1999. We remember her with fond memories and extend our sympathy to her family and friends.
Under Anne’s directorship Agenda made the transition from an editorial collective to a section 21 company with its first Board of Directors, formalising the organisation’s structure. Some of the notable activities of Agenda under her leadership was the holding of two important consultative forums with women on HIV/AIDS and on Women and Land which enabled women’s activism and voices to inform the journals that were published addressing these critical gender issues for women. Agenda also published a monograph with the African Gender Institute that highlighted the importance of the implementation of gender policy and gender practices in development, ‘Translating commitment into policy and practice? 3 case Studies’. Agenda celebrated its 10th year with Anne at the helm and she assisted in the laying of a solid foundation for the organisation to develop its activities further into the next decade and amongst her other projects the Agenda writing programme and a website were started. Agenda honours Anne and the contribution that she made to Agenda, her unfailing enthusiasm and concern and drive to undertake projects that would advance gender equality are remembered by those who worked with her. It is with much sadness that we hear of her passing.
